US President Trump faces the second Impeachment; Process underway; National guards stationed in the capitol building

Scores of US  troops squatted on floors of the Capitol building as The US House of Representatives gets ready to vote later to impeach President Donald Trump on charges of inciting his supporters to storm the Capitol last week.-January 6, 2021.

National Guard Soldiers and Airmen from several states have traveled to the National Capital Region to provide support to federal and district authorities leading up to the 59th Presidential Inauguration.

According to BBC: the vote is expected to pass in the Democrat-led House, which would make him the first US president to be impeached twice. A  growing number of Republicans have voiced their support for impeachment, including senior House Republican Liz Cheney. If Trump is impeached in the House, the Senate will then hold a trial. A two-thirds majority is required to convict him.

This development has come in the wake of Vice-President Mike Pence rejecting efforts to invoke the 25th Amendment to strip Trump of power.

President Trump has defended his pre-riot speech, in which he encouraged supporters to march to the Capitol, saying it was “totally appropriate”.

US  Vice President Mike Pence has said that he will not “yield to pressure” to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove President Donald Trump from his post. In a letter to Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representative, Mr. Pence condemned last week’s riot in the Capitol. His letter came just hours before the House of Representatives was to vote on a resolution that calls on Mr. Pence to initiate the 25th Amendment process

He said he did not yield to pressure to exert power beyond his constitutional authority to determine the outcome of the Presidential election. He said that he did not believe that impeachment is in the best interest of the nation or consistent with the US constitution. Mr. Pence also said that just eight days are left in the President’s term. The international media has reported the development widely.

The Vice President reiterated his commitment to work in good faith with the incoming administration to ensure an orderly transition of power.

The social media platforms carried his letter to the speaker; pictures of national guards lying on the floors of the capitol building which was stormed last week by an unruly mob. The violence that day had left five dead and scores of others injured and now frame by frame investigations are underway to bring culprits on the mat.
