SC puts on hold controversial farm laws till further orders; Committee of experts formed to discuss the issue
The supreme court today put on hold till a further three farm laws that were at the eye of the farmers’ storm as farmers apprehend their lands will be taken away under the garb of the new legislation enacted by the central government in September. Scores of farmers are agitating on the national capital borders for the repeal of these farm laws.
The top court also said a committee of agricultural experts would be formed to take over negotiations with farmers to end the crisis.
Members of the Supreme Court Ordered Committee: 1) Bhupinder Singh Maan, President BKU 2) Dr. Pramod Kumar Joshi, Intl Policy Head 3) Ashok Gulati, Agricultural Economist 4) Anil Dhanvat, Shivkeri Sangathan, Maharashtra, media reports say.
“This is not politics. There is a difference between politics and judiciary and you will have to cooperate”, says SC to farmer unions. The committee will submit the report to the apex court. Details are awaited.
“We’ll hold a core committee meeting after the Supreme Court’s order. After this, we’ll discuss it with our legal team and decide what needs to be done: Rakesh Tikait, Spokesperson, Bharatiya Kisan Union has retweeted on his Twitter handle the comments given to ANI.
The general perception among farmers is that they will continue the stir and will go back only after the repeal of laws.
