India Covid-19:South treads cautiously on unlocking suspecting dipping cases’ as alligator bait
June 11, 2021: Even as the declining number of daily fresh cases is being looked at as a temptation for the states to lift the prolonged lockdown, frequently extended since April third week, the southern states
showed a sense of caution in keeping the status quo, except Karnataka which decided to modify some of the restrictions imposed in all but 11 districts.
The 11 districts, which l still have a high positivity rate of over 10 percent would continue to be under full lockdown, while the remaining districts have been given relief from a total lockdown but with modified relaxations.
Karnataka has in all 30 districts, and the modified lockdown restrictions would be set in force from June 14 to 21. However, the Covid night curfew will be imposed from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. in all the districts which have been exempted from the lockdown relaxations. The weekend curfew will also come into force from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Friday to Monday in all districts to be given a reprieve from lockdown relaxations.
The status of Covid 19 in the Southern States as of Thursday:
Tamil Nadu: The state showed a further declining trend in fresh cases with only 16,813 positive infections reported for Thursday. The death roll touched 358. The number of active cases dropped below two lakh after nearly a month on Thursday and presently a total of 1, 88,864 people are under treatment. The state’s overall tally of patients reported since the pandemic broke out last year stands at
23, 08,838 and overall toll at 28,528.
Kerala: The state on Thursday reported 14,424 new cases from 1, 07,250 tests. The death toll stood at 194 in the past few days.
The Test Positive Rate hovered in the range of 14 to 15 percent with not much reduction since the last fortnight. A decline of active cases at 1,35,298 and a cumulative death figure at 10631 were the other significant novel coronavirus incidence shown by the state. The cumulative caseload stood at 26,88,590.
Karnataka on Thursday reported 11,042 new cases of COVID-19 and 194 deaths, taking the total number of infections to 27, 39,290 and the toll to 32,485. The day also saw 15,721 discharges.
Bengaluru urban logged 2,191 new cases, as the city saw 4,846 discharges and 47 deaths. The overall recoveries at 24,96,1 32 and the fatalities tally at 32,485 were the other highlights.
Karnataka still has an active caseload of 2, 10,652. Meanwhile, as many as 157 patients recovering from Covid 19 succumbed to the unrelated Covid infection and known as Mucormycosis or ‘black fungus’ in the state. A total of 2,258 persons were afflicted with ‘black fungus’ as on June 9, the state government told the High Court of Karnataka on Thursday.
As many as 1,947 persons afflicted with Mucormycosis are undergoing treatment, 102 have been cured and 76 were reported to have left the hospitals against medical advice.
The state, which has been proactively taking steps to reach the best and timely attention to the Covid 19 infections and related steps for others to prevent the infection from spreading, has
covered people living in slums across the city of Bengaluru under the mass vaccination.
The Bruhat Bengaluru, Mahanagar Palike (BBMP) has told the Karnataka High Court that 10, 91,691 of 30, 68,090 persons living in 1,311 slums have been administered Covid inoculation so far.
Telangana on Thursday recorded 1,798 new COVID-19 cases, pushing the overall tally to 5, 98,611, while the toll rose to 3,440 with 14 more deaths, as 2,524 people recovered. The capital city of Hyderabad accounted for the greatest number of cases with 174.
Andhra Pradesh: The state counted 8,110 fresh cases and 67 fatalities on Thursday. Its recovery of patients from the Covid virus infection stood at 12,981 for the day. The cumulative cases toted up to 17, 87,883 and recoveries to 16, 77,063 so far, the latest bulletin said.
Puducherry: The Union Territory on Thursday recorded a fresh case count of 507 with the tall so far-reaching to 1,11,255. Only deaths were reported for the day reflecting an encouraging improvement to 1.91 percent. The total number of cured patients from coronavirus infection so far is 1,02,893 with active cases numbering 1,657.
