Climate woes: Thermacool paint is in vogue

If summer is around, How can be hot discussions on innovations to reduce heat in homes and business complexes can be far behind?

Taking advantage of research on a new paint – Thermocool paint, an enterprising Mala Roy says that they have come a long way in the field and they have implemented the project successfully at several commercial sites and” I am certain is proud of mitigating carbon footprints through the new research”.

‘Energy saved is energy produced’ is what Mrs. Mala Roy, Managing Director, Thermacool Cool Coat Pvt Ltd believes in.

According to her, Thermacool’s mission is to help reduce carbon footprint save the Environment with a green product that is tuned with the ‘Made in India’ concept. Theremacool Paint is a special cooling paint coating that helps in reducing surface temperature. The inspiration for Thermacool’s innovative coating systems was developed after India pledged to reduce carbon footprint to 2005 levels at the Paris climate summit.

The innovation was developed at IIT Bombay by Prof Anand. S Khanna and was brought out to the market for use by Mrs. Mala Roy, who truly believed in the potential of this technology and understood the need for a green product like this, her company says.

Thermacool coating results in bringing about 25-30% savings in the AC expenses and results in 7 units of electricity savings for a 1-ton AC running for 10h which is equivalent to 4.2Kg of coal burning.

In this context, the ‘cool paint’ can be seen as a revolutionary development with the potential of reducing our reliance on air conditioners and helping in reducing global warming at large.

According to a crisp note, prepared by her company, The inspiration for Thermacool’s innovative coating systems was developed after India pledged to reduce carbon footprint to 2005 levels at the Paris climate summit.

The innovation is true to the concept of Make in India and was developed by Prof Anand Khanna at IIT Bombay. The Ph.D. work culminated into an excellent product, ready to be used in the market. After initial trials, the product was sold to Thermogreen Cool Coat Pvt. Ltd.

Several proofs of Concept trials ranging from Concrete buildings to Steel sheds to defense warehouses and airforce hangers, railway coaches, and buses rooftops have been conducted showing great results and a drop in temperature.

This reduction reduces energy consumption HVAC by 30%. Thermacool coating results in bringing about 25-30% savings in the AC expenses and results in 7 units of electricity savings for a 1-ton AC running for 10h which is equivalent to 4.2Kg of coal burning.

(Thermacool Coating is a solar heat-reflective, rooftop coating. The primary function is reducing the heat at the rooftop, to make life comfortable for occupants in the building. Thermacool Coating provides an innovative, dual function i.e. high infra-red heat reflection and heat-insulation. A combined action of these two brings down substantial temperature drop. It works with IR reflecting pigments that have a high Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) value of 102. It is supported by a BIS standard IS 17218:2019.

In locations with high ambient temperatures, ranging from 40-50oC, the roof surface acquires a temperature of 55 to 80oC. On application of Thermacool Coating, the rooftop temperatures are lowered by upto 15oC to 20oC. This provides a lowering of the inner room temperature (ambient temperature) by 4oC to 8oC. For buildings using high-energy or HVAC equipment, this heat-reflective coating helps in reducing the electricity consumption significantly by 25%-40%.)

The concept has been implemented and well taken by various authorities such as – Defence, Indian Railways, Ordnance factories, public work depot, PSUs, BSE, Pvt, and offices of JK tyres, HUL

About Paint: Thermacool Coating is an outdoor coating system, especially for rooftops, concrete or steel, applied to reflect solar heat, thus bringing down the roof temperature by 15-20oC depending on hot summers, thereby resulting in the drop in indoor ambient temperature by 4-8oC.

The coating has excellent infra-red heat reflection properties, which provides the cooling factor. The primary benefit is a 15oC to 20oC reduction in rooftop temperature. The paint system termed as ‘Cool Paint Innovation’ consistently delivers a solar reluctance index (SRI) of 102. Thermacool Coating enhances the quality of living and working conditions inside the building or structure, thus delivering improved productivity. It significantly reduces carbon footprint and is an eco-friendly solution for reducing Global Warming. Thermacool Coating is a patented product, uniquely designed and developed at IIT Bombay, and technology transferred to Thermogreen Cool Coat Pvt. Ltd.
